Wilford Brimley, ‘Cocoon’ and ‘Natural’ actor, dies at 85

Category: آرکانساس Comments: No comments

LOS ANGELES — Wilford Brimley, who worked his way up from movie stunt rider to an indelible character actor who brought gruff charm, and sometimes menace, to a range of films that included “Cocoon,” “The Natural” and “The Firm,” has died. He was 85.

Brimley’s manager Lynda Bensky said the actor died Saturday morning in a Utah hospital. He was on dialysis and had several medical ailments, she said.

The mustached Brimley was a familiar face for a number of roles, often playing characters like his grizzled baseball manager in “The Natural” opposite Robert Redford’s bad-luck phenomenon. He also worked with Redford in “Brubaker” and “The Electric Horseman.”

Brimley’s best-known work was in “Cocoon,” in which he was part of a group of seniors who discover an alien...

Old Homestead takes outdoor dining to a whole other level

Category: کرین نیویورک Comments: No comments

It remained open through two World Wars, the Spanish Flu, the Great Depression and Superstorm Sandy, but the Covid-19 pandemic proved too much for the Old Homestead Steakhouse to swallow. It shut its doors March 12 and has remained closed since.

That’s about to change.

The 152-year-old restaurant on the corner of 14th Street and 9th Avenue—just about as traditional as they come—is about to reinvent itself by moving outside. On August 6, co-owners and brothers Marc and Greg Sherry will re-open, adding entertainment and altruism to its menu.

“Over the last two months Marc and I have been working on a template on how we open, what do we give back to the people, and how do we do it in an intelligent and safe manner,” explained Greg Sherry...

A fun week of mystery plant, with lots of input

Category: آرکانساس Comments: No comments

Many have been asking me where I get the pictures for the mystery plants. Some I take in my weekly visits to gardens, others are sent to me by friends or readers wanting to know what they are, and others are now sending me ideas for the mystery plant challenge. I love all the input in trying to name the plants. Keep your ideas and pictures coming! We all learn something new. Here are your plants for the week:

Rudbeckia laciniate – Cutleaf Coneflower or Golden Glow. Golden Glow is a double flowered variety with large yellow flowers. The flowers look more like a chrysanthemum bloom

than a black-eyed Susan, which is what most people think of when they hear Rudbeckia.

This perennial plant grows tall—5 to 6 feet or more, and it can spread aggressively, especially in good soil...

The Arkansas Department of Health reported 637 new covid-19 cases along with six additional deaths on Sunday, according to a Twitter post from Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

The cumulative number of covid-19 infections in Arkansas reached 43,810 with the new cases added on Sunday. The number of active cases rose by 91, from 6,679 to 6,770.

For city's runners, virtual racing is taking off

Category: کرین نیویورک Comments: No comments

For New York City’s legion of runners, the mass starts might be gone, but not the races.

With all in-person events cancelled for the foreseeable future, virtual racing is booming. Organizers big and small, piggybacking on the upswing in running as a way to cope with the stresses of lockdown, have seen participation soar. The New York City Marathon, one of the biggest road races in the world, canceled its 50th anniversary edition because of Covid-19. It now expects record numbers to sign up for its virtual event.

Of course, like just about everything else in what was once the epicenter of the pandemic, things look and feel a little different. No crowds, no tables of water or Gatorade, and in many cases, no official routes.

That hasn’t stopped runners like John O’Neill.

Los Angeles protesters demand rent cancellation amid virus

Category: آرکانساس Comments: No comments

LOS ANGELES — Demonstrators who gathered again Sunday outside the home of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti called on the city to cancel rents for people finding it hard to make ends meet as the coronavirus pandemic ravages California’s economy.

Tenant rights activists statewide have for weeks urged leaders to take additional action to prevent Californians from losing their apartments and falling into homelessness as expanded unemployment benefits expire while virus cases continue to surge.

The state court system is considering lifting its emergency restrictions on processing eviction cases later this month, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Since March, the pandemic has caused millions of Californians to lose their jobs.

California has tallied more than a half-million confirmed virus c...

Portland police declare unlawful assembly during protest

Category: آرکانساس Comments: No comments

The Portland Police Bureau declared an unlawful assembly Saturday night when people gathered outside a police precinct in Oregon’s largest city and threw bottles toward officers, police said.

Until that point, federal, state and local law enforcement had been seemingly absent from the protests Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The demonstrations — that for weeks ended with tear gas, fireworks shot towards buildings, federal agents on the street and injuries to protesters and officers — have recently ended with chanting and conversations.

Activists and Oregon officials urged people at Saturday night’s protest in Portland to re-center the focus on Black Lives Matter, three days after the Trump administration agreed to reduce the presence of federal agents.

Groups gathered Saturday eveni...

MASTERSON ONLINE: Lost in time

Category: آرکانساس Comments: No comments

Of the once-revered qualities such as honor, honesty, common sense and integrity that have steadily faded from our nation’s culture, I put the related loss of loyalty near the top.

That’s equally true for us aging baby boomers, many of whom in youth were taught to value loyalty in our work, lives and relationships.

The workplace has changed dramatically in recent decades, which is likely one reason for the demise of loyalty, a quality many businesses once considered indispensable.

Today I believe most corporations couldn’t care less if an employee is loyal. The attitude is more likely to be, “an employee is free to leave if they become discouraged. Three others are waiting to take their place.”

Also, outsourcing labor to countries where those manning the phones are barely able to speak i...
